WHAT A WEEKEND OF NON STOP ACTION!!
Advice to the French Goalkeeper and Defenders; “DUCK!! L’ORANJE!!” On Friday fittingly, The Netherlands fried the French 4-1.
The Dutch have mastered the so called Group of Death, first taking down World Cup Champ Italy 3-0 and then the aforementioned France. That’s 7 goals scored by 6 different players!
Italy was able to barely stay alive against scrappy Romania. Luca Toni’s finishing was anything but award worthy, nor was his acting performances in the penalty area, as he continuously flopped looking for a phantom foul. Goal Keeper Gianluigi Buffon was all that stood between Italy and an early exit with a spectacular Penalty Kick save as time wound down.
On Saturday, defending Champion Greece allowed the trophy to slip from their hands as they fell to Russia 1-0 and out of contention.
Sweden had designs on an upset, but David Villa and Spain thwarted them 2-1. Villa now leads all scorers with 4 goals.
Sundays matches saw Turkey charge into the quarterfinals past the Czech Republic. The Turks cashed in on late goals in the 87th and 89th minute to advance as the Czechs, you guessed it, checked out.
Portugal allowed Switzerland to reclaim some of their honor, as they rested their top players and sleepwalked through a 2-0 loss.
On the home front, the US National team got out of their goal scoring drought and bombed Barbados 8-0 in the 1st game of World Cup qualifying.
