Euro 2008 Tournament Update

Auto Date Monday, June 9th, 2008

The Euro 2008 is taking place right now. A great way for Soccer.com affiliates to drive sales is to keep your visitors posted with news about the games. Here is a great article you can use:

The UEFA (pronounced  you-ay-fa) European Championships began this weekend with fairly predictable results  In Group A action on Saturday, host Switzerland fell (perhaps unfairly) 1-0 to The Czech Republic.  The Czechs benefitted from not one, but two handball non calls in the penalty area as the match wound down.  The Czechs achieved only one shot on goal, but obviously made the most of it.

Portugal finished the day with a 2-0 victory over Turkey.  Though he didn’t score, Ronaldo (in his GREEN Nike Vapors) tasted what is sure to become commonplace for him in the next three weeks, as he was leveled by a hard foul in the first 45 seconds of the match.

On Sunday in Group B the day began with Austria taking on Croatia.  The co hosts were also denied an opening victory when Luka Modric slotted home a penalty kick in just the fourth minute as Croatia held on for the win.

Finally in the last game of the inaugural weekend, Germany kept it’s perfect record against Poland intact.  With two goals from polish born striker Lukas Podolski, Germany notched a 2-0 win over it’s neighbor and traditional rival.  In fourteen meetings, Poland has managed no better than two ties in their history.

Not to be outdone here at home, the US National Team held on to tie World #1 Argentina 0-0 in a Friendly Match at Giants Stadium in New Jersey yesterday, in a game that begun with +100 degree temperatures and ended in a torrential downpour.  Before a record 78,000 in attendance GK Tim Howard stood on his head to make save after miraculous save to keep the Yanks even.  If not for an unforgiving crossbar, American defender Onyewu Oguchi may have scored the winning header off a corner kick early in the second half.  Captain Landon Donovan had a solid performance while gaining his 100th cap for the red, white, and blue.

Today’s EURO 08 matches feature the GROUP OF DEATH, otherwise known as Group C (doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, does it?).  Romania and France are knotted 0-0 at the half with the Netherlands and Italy to follow soon after.  This could be the match of the tournament.
